Cyber attacks in Estonia threaten national security

Thursday, May 17, 2007

Recent cyber attacks in Estonia that have paralyzed the high tech country’s Web sites are a threat to national security, according to the country’s Minister of Defense. This has concerned NATO, seeing that Estonia is a member state of the organization. The attacks have subsided this week.

The Defense Minister Jaak Aaviksoo also mentioned that Russia may have been behind the attacks. He stated that the IP numbers in the initial attack belong to Russian government offices, but says that it’s insufficient evidence that the government is behind it. The Kremlin is dismissing the accusations, saying that its caused by hackers producing fake Kremlin IP addresses.

The cyber attacks came after Estonia removed a Soviet-era statue of a Bronze Soldier in Tallinn, which angered many Russians. Riots have left 160 injured, and 1 dead.

Both NATO and the European Union views this as an attack on one of their member states. Three hundred Estonian IT specialist worked day and night to fix the problem.

The Estonian government plans to analyze server logs and data to find out who is behind the attacks.

How A Dentist In Pleasantville Fixes A Cracked Tooth

byAlma Abell

If you have a cracked or chipped tooth, you probably feel stressed about the way your smile will looks. However, there is no need to be stressed, since your Dentist in Pleasantville can repair the chipped tooth. The amount of time it takes to repair it will depend on the nature and level of the damage. Here is a detailed analysis of how your dentists will repair different types of chipped teeth.

Minor Cracks/ Chips

If you have very minor cracks in your tooth, the dentist will probably not do much to repair it. He or she will only polish the teeth and ensure that the surface is uniform. For minor cracks, your dentist may use a small amount of composite material to fill in the cracked areas and then polish the tooth.

Severe Cracks/Chips

If you have a severe crack in your tooth, your General Dentistry in Pleasantville will first fill the crack with a composite material. Where the crack is very severe, the dentist will examine the cracks and chips to determine whether the root or the surrounding tissues has been damaged. If the root is damaged, he will perform a root canal treatment on the tooth. He may also have to place a dental crown on the tooth to prevent the crack from causing further damage.

What Causes Cracks in a Tooth?

There are many causes of cracked teeth. Some of the most common include falls or other mishaps, biting on hard things or decay. If the chip or crack is caused by decay, your Dentist in Pleasantville will examine the other teeth to determine if they are affected. In most cases, the decayed area of the tooth is removed and filled. Crowns are then placed over them to maintain a glowing smile. If the decay has damaged the root of your tooth, then the doctors will perform a root canal treatment and crown the tooth to repair the problem.

Even though having a cracked or chipped tooth is quite distressing, your Dentist in Pleasantville can help you repair it easily. However, it is essential to contact him or her right way and book the next appointment available. For more information visit Absecon Dental

New Zealand government withdraws asset forfeiture bill

Monday, July 17, 2006

The New Zealand government has withdrawn its Criminal Proceeds and Instruments Bill from Parliament, putting on hold its plans to introduce a non-conviction-based asset forfeiture regime.

The bill was introduced to Parliament in June last year, and was removed from the Parliamentary Order Paper in the last week, before it had even received a first reading vote.

A spokesperson for the Minister of Justice refused to give a reason for the bill’s withdrawal, saying only that there were “a couple of procedural issues that need to be dealt with”.

The bill would establish a non-conviction-based asset forfeiture regime, which would allow the government to confiscate the assets of those suspected of involvement in serious crime. Suspected criminals would be required to prove on the balance of probabilities that their assets were legally acquired or else forfeit them to the crown. No criminal conviction would be required.

The scheme has attracted criticism from both sides of the House, with the Green Party calling it “an affront to the principles of justice and law”, and the National Party demanding a much tougher regime. Given the stated positions of parties on the bill, the most likely reason for its withdrawal is that the government does not have a majority to pass it in its present form.

The Swiss vote yes to same-sex relationships and “Schengen/Dublin”

Sunday, June 5, 2005

The Swiss people have voted a double yes in referenda to the proposals over same-sex partnerships and the Schengen/Dublin bilateral agreements. Overall they voted 58.03% for the same-sex partnerships and 54.60% for Schengen/Dublin.

The referendum of allowing the registration of same-sex partnerships was widely welcomed with the people voting 58.03% Yes and 41.97% No. Same-sex partnerships are already legal in the cantons of Geneva and Zürich. The partnerships would carry many of the legal rights of marriage, with the exception of adoption rights and fertility treatments.

The referendum of the Schengen/Dublin bilateral agreement was initially accepted, despite growing resentment with the electorate. It was passed through with the people voting 54.60% Yes and 45.40% No. The agreement relaxes existing border controls between other participating nations in concert with the Schengen treaty, which is one of the competences for inclusion in the European Union.

The bilateral agreement also includes participation in the Dublin treaty, which defines a policy for handling asylum seekers within Schengen participating countries. Also stipulated by the agreements is the use of a unified “European Informatic System” for tracking people who are wanted, missing, or are illegal immigrants and also aims to stop traffic of illegal or stolen property.

Out of the big 4 main parties the centre-left Social Democrats, the liberal-right Free Democrats and the centre-right Christian Democrats have said yes to both proposals, however the populist-right Swiss People’s Party have said no to both proposals.

How To Find The Right Sound System Rental Company

By SeanM Murphy

Whether you are planning a corporate event, a business convention or even a party, a sound system is very essential. Good sound systems tend to be very expensive and may also become outdated in a shorter span of time than you anticipated. Thats why sourcing high quality equipment from a sound system rental company is a good idea to meet temporary requirements. But how should go about renting the sound system(s)? Heres a look.

Plan your budget and choose equipment with care

Budget is the most important aspect of any event as you will need to manage all resources within the allocated funds. Identify cost effective rentals where both equipment quality and affordable prices are assured. A careful comparison of the rental rates and terms offered by different rental providers in your city should do the trick.

The sound system rental equipment should be equipped to perform well in the chosen venue, whether it is indoors or outdoors. You will need to consider factors like the number of people attending the event i.e. audience size and other aspects such as the location, size and landscape of the venue. These details should be clearly mentioned when discussing you needs with the rental company to ensure that you source the right equipment for the event.

Understand equipment

As music is an important part of any event, a good sound system ensures that people have a good time at yours. As a planner, you need to be aware of the different equipment that you can rent from a sound system rental company and their specific uses. This way you can accommodate all the necessary items within the budget very easily. Knowing the equipment will also help you avoid renting unnecessary items that waste space and money.

The basic equipment that is available at all rental companies includes speakers, subwoofers, receiver/amplifiers and power mains. Additional devices like microphones and cables can also be rented in request. It is better to choose sound equipment from reputed companies as they promise better output. But it is not necessary to spend extra money on branded equipment if a lower model satisfies the needs for the event.

Choose a reputed agency

It is very important to opt for reputed rental companies as they provide good service and high-quality branded products. A good rental company offers a wide range of products at reasonable prices with extra services like delivery, installation and dismantling at the event. Some companies even provide on site tech support to fix any problems arising during the event quickly.

You could identify potential rental companies through the internet, references and hosts of successful events. Run a background check of the rental providers before contacting them. As rental companies within the city or area engage in fierce competition with each other, the chances that you will find discount schemes or special offers can be quite high. But make sure that you do not compromise on the quality of equipment just to get a cheap deal.

A good sound system can make or break an event. Many events and parties are often remembered for their superior sound quality. Good quality equipment from a reliable sound system rental company can work wonders for your event without straining your budget.

Fire strikes Slovak Academy of Sciences

Saturday, July 17, 2010

The Virology Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS) in Bratislava was severely damaged by fire. The flames reportedly reached as high as one hundred meters. The fire most likely started from the gas tank used for oxy-fuel welding during the building’s restoration process, SAS speaker Viera Rosová said.

Firefighters from all Bratislava fire-stations took part in the fire-fighting operation. The situation was complicated by dense smoke, necessitating the use of gas masks.

Thanks to a quick evacuation of SAS employees and construction workers, none were injured. However, some equipment of the top-level scientific facility was damaged and various research projects will be affected as well, Rosová admitted. The “software unit containing information of incalculable value” was rescued in time, reports say.

There is no danger of toxic spills or leak of viruses. The micro-biotic organisms studied in the institute are safely stored and infected animals were not held in this building. The institute owns about two thousand animals. The virology samples will be destroyed as the coolers went out of service after the power supply was cut for security reasons during fire-fighting. The SAS vice-chairman Albert Beier estimated the value of the cooler boxes to be close to two million Euros. “They often contain a life-long work of our researchers,” he added.

Iranian International Master Dorsa Derakhshani discusses her chess career with Wikinews

Tuesday, April 14, 2020

In February 2017, the Iranian Chess Federation announced two teenage chess players, Dorsa Derakhshani and her younger brother Borna Derakhshani, were banned from representing the national team. The federation announced their decision although Dorsa Derakhshani had previously decided and informed the chess federation she did not wish to play for Iran.

Dorsa Derakhshani is currently 21 years old and holds the International Master (IM) as well as Woman Grand Master (WGM) titles. Her brother, Borna, plays for the English Federation and holds the FIDE Master title.

Dorsa Derakhshani was banned since she did not wear a hijab, an Islamic headscarf, while competing at the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival in January 2017. Under the laws of Islamic Republic of Iran, hijab is a mandatory dress code. Her brother Borna Deraskhsani was banned for playing against Israeli Grand Master (GM) Alexander Huzman at the same tournament. Iran does not recognise the existence of Israel, and previously, Irani athletes have avoided playing against Israeli athletes.

Mehrdad Pahlavanzadeh, the president of the country’s chess federation, explained the decision to ban the players saying, “As a first step, these two will be denied entry to all tournaments taking place in Iran and in the name of Iran, they will no longer be allowed the opportunity to be present on the national team.” ((fa))Farsi language: ?????? ????? ?? ??? ??? ?? ??? ????? ?? ?? ???? ???????? ?? ?? ????? ? ?? ??? ????? ?????? ??????? ????? ??????? ? ???? ???? ???? ?? ??? ??? ?? ??????? ????. He further stated, “Unfortunately, something that should not have happened has happened and our national interest is paramount and we have reported this position to the Ministry of Sports.” ((fa))Farsi language: ????????? ?????? ?? ????? ????????? ?????? ??? ? ????? ??? ?? ?? ?? ???? ?????? ???? ? ?? ??? ???? ?? ?? ????? ???? ?? ????? ?????.

IM Dorsa Derakhshani, who currently studies at Saint Louis University in the United States and plays for the United States Chess Federation, discussed her chess career, time in Iran and the 2017 controversy, and her life in Saint Louis with a Wikinews correspondent.
