FEMA official in New Orleans blasts agency’s response

Sunday, October 23, 2005

Marty Bahamonde, the only FEMA emplyee in New Orleans during hurricane Katrina, testifying before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, contradicts former FEMA director Michael Brown’s testimony and says Brown ignored his pleas for help.

In an August 31 Blackberry email:

“Sir, I know you know that this situation is past critical. Here are some things you might not know. Hotels are kicking people out, thousands gathering in the streets with no food or water. Hundreds still being rescued from homes” and “medical staff at the Dome expect to run out of oxygen in about 2 hours”

In an email from one of Brown’s aids:”Please schedule Joe Scarborough this evening… Also, it is very important that time is allowed for Mr. Brown to eat dinner. Gievn[sic] that Baton Rouge is back to normal, restaurants are getting busy”

Solutions To Common Mistakes In E Commerce Website Development

byadmin

A common misconception for Atlanta business owners developing their own eCommerce sites is that using a template from an eCommerce platform is all that is needed to launch a terrific website.

While these templates do offer support in creating a website, they can also be modified and added to, often resulting in a complicated, difficult to navigate site for end-users. To avoid this issue, working with a company specializing in eCommerce website development offers a practical solution to these common problems.

Too Much Going On

A common mistake with do-it-yourself eCommerce websites is information and graphic overload on home pages, landing pages, and sales pages. This can even include simple issues such as too many different colors, graphics, and fonts used on a page.

The solution to this issue is to consider the use of white space on the page and to keep information in concise, informative blocks. A top eCommerce website development team looks at both the functionality as well as the overall design of the site to provide the correct balance.

Security and Trust

A professional company in Atlanta offering eCommerce website development puts security for the end-user as a central component of the site. This means ensuring the SSL certificate is valid and recognized across all platforms and browsers, and also providing the necessary information to help the end-user to feel confident in putting their personal and financial information on the site to place an order.

Ensuring the shopping cart functions and there are no error messages or inconsistencies in the checkout process are always a critical part of eCommerce website development. When consumers have difficulties or see atypical types of pages at checkout, they are very unlikely to continue with the purchase, resulting in abandoned shopping carts, low conversion rates, and limited sales. On the other hand, a seamless, secure and positive experience at checkout builds customer confidence and keeps them coming back.

Japan raises severity level of crisis; efforts to cool damaged nuclear power plant continue

Friday, March 18, 2011

As the nuclear crisis in Japan’s crippled Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant appears to worsen, Japan’s nuclear safety agency raised their assessment of its severity from 4 to 5 on the 7-level International Nuclear Event Scale, the same rating given the 1979 Three Mile Island crisis. Japan’s Prime Minister, Naoto Kan, said bluntly that the situation at the nuclear power plant was “very grave”. Weather forecasts indicate changing winds may begin moving radiation closer to Tokyo by March 30.

Efforts thus far to cool nuclear fuel in the reactors and the spent-fuel pools has produced little if any success, contends United States government officials.

Engineers are working frantically to connect electrical power to two reactors in the plant, as well as to restart the cooling systems and prevent overheating of fuel rods. Tokyo Electric Power Co. stated that it hopes to reconnect a power line needed to restart water pumps to the No. 1 and No. 2 reactors by Saturday morning. However, a TEPCO official cautioned that if the water pumps were damaged by the tsunami, they could fail to restart.

The extent of the damage to the plant’s reactors is still unclear. Japanese officials have concentrated on cooling spent fuel rods in Reactor No. 3’s storage pool. On Friday, however, steam was seen rising from Reactor No. 2., where an explosion occurred on Tuesday. Additionally, engineers said on Thursday that the steel lining of the storage pool at Reactor No. 4 and its concrete base seemed damaged, as attempts to refill the pool with water became increasingly difficult.

In a briefing on Friday, Philippe Jamet, a commissioner at France’s nuclear regulator Autorite de Surete Nucleaire, said, “We must avoid being overly optimistic. This will likely take human intervention like going into control rooms to reconnect valves.”

Wikinews interviews Christoph Bals of the NGO Germanwatch after conclusion of climate conference

Correction — February 25, 2008 Translation problems from German to English, see Talk page.

Thursday, December 27, 2007

A year ago I would have found the current outcome almost revolutionary. … A lot has been achieved, but the biggest hurdles are still in front of us.

With the Climate Conference in Bali having come to a successful conclusion, Wikinews journalist Sean Heron interviewed Christoph Bals from the German NGO Germanwatch on his opinion of the outcome, and an outlook on the future negotiations. Christoph is the Senior Political Executive of Germanwatch, Co-Author of the Climate protection-Index and did lobby work on Bali.

The Truth About Raising Kids

Submitted by: David Beart

From a young age, you just knew you wanted a house full of children. You could imagine your spouse, playing ball with the kids in the yard and the black lab that would be chasing tennis balls in the midst of everything. You and your spouse would be cooking meals together, taste testing the soup, snuggling in bed on Sundays morning and listening for the pitter-patter of little feet to rush in your room. You had it all figured out. Then you spent the next few years changing your dating habits hoping to find the perfect spouse. He now likes the girls who can cook a mean ham, and she is in love with any guy that is the perfect uncle to his nieces and nephews. You bought the ring and now .you are here. Happily ever after.

Let s move forward a few years now. You are both exhausted, stressed about money and the kids, still cute – are often annoying and bothersome. Your entire life has been turned topsy turvy and is little more than a platform designed to make the little lives in your life happier than your own. Sex declines, you barely speak to your spouse, and you live on the constant brink of something that feels like irritation. As if at any moment, you could explode. Of course, you don t because you have become well equipped to handle stress and the constant changing of plans and dreams. For most however, the picture perfect life that they imagined is lost in a sea of constant doing.

Raising kids is difficult. At some point, you have to wonder why people don t truly prepare you for it. Why no one stood up at your wedding and said, Don t do it! You have to wonder why when you had kid one, kid two and then kid three there wasn t some well meaning soul there to tell you that you were ruining your life. Not really of course. Kids do add a lot of things to your life and it is the natural progression of humanity to have children. But it definitely isn t a happily ever after affair like it is depicted. And then, as further insult you, just like every other mom and dad propagate this ideal by posting posed pictures on Facebook, writing Christmas cards that talk about your kids as if you don t exist anymore. You know, painting the perfect picture of family life. All smiles, when the reality is that inside your home a secret war is taking place. The war of being who you want to be and being the perfect parent and spouse.

While all of this may seem a bit pessimistic, it is fairly spot on. Married couples everywhere are so used to adjusting their dreams and rolling with the punches that they effectively have whiplash. And once the cute phases of babyhood and toddlers are replaced by hormonal tweens and ungrateful teens, you too will wonder how you got sucked into this life for yourself. You spend every moment of raising kids waiting for the next and trying to prepare yourself for something that is impossible to predict. You hope like hell that your spouse is still there somewhere waiting in the wings and then you begin planning your life together, with the empty nest praying that your kids will visit you and not be too demented from your inexperienced parenting skills.

You have regrets, you have mistakes, you feel like you missed out on a lot of important things because you were constantly busy and then you start thinking about grand children. Ah-hah! Now you get it. You realize in that epiphany moment that no one warned you, no one told you about how hard it was to raise children because they, just like you do now, wanted grandchildren to right all the wrongs they felt they made as parents. They wanted to take all their living experiences, erase all their mistakes, and throw it into enjoying something so beautiful, so innocent, and so precious that no one under 45 could truly appreciate. Children! Your children. And there you go .the truth about raising children.

Paramedics protest outside New South Wales parliament

Tuesday, July 22, 2008

Paramedics employed by the Ambulance Service of New South Wales in Australia marched on the New South Wales parliament today. They called for the Government to sack Ambulance Service of New South Wales CEO Greg Rochford, hire 300 additional ambulance officers and 60 patient transport officers. Paramedics gave the Government 48 hours to agree to the proposed staffing levels or face industrial action.

“We are currently at the same levels of staffing that we had in 2002 and these not withstanding, also there’s been an increase in workload of 5 per cent per year every year since then,” said Health Services Union general secretary Michael Williamson.

The union also called for chief executive Greg Roachford and other senior management to be sacked over what has been described as a culture of bullying.

Cathal Ryan, early board member and son of co-founder of Irish flag carrier Ryanair, dies at 48

Friday, December 21, 2007

Cathal Ryan, an early board member of Irish non-designated flag carrier, and son of late co-founder Tony Ryan, has died. He was 48, and had been diagnosed with cancer.

Cathal bacame one of Ryanair’s first pilots, having trained as one in the 1980s in Sri Lanka, when his father set up the airline in 1985 in trust for his three sons, of which Cathal was the eldest. He left the Far East specifically to join the airline.

In 1986 he became the head of London European Airways, a business in which Ryanair had bought an 85% stake. This position, however, quickly disappeared as the carrier became Ryanair UK and was then merged entirely with Ryanair.

Over the next decade, Cathal worked both on the executive board of the airline and as a pilot, although he resigned from the latter by 1996. He remained with Ryanir until leaving the board 2002, by which time he was a multi-millionaire due to the success of the airline.

He continued to be actively involved with business ventures, taking an active role in running his family’s stud farm, as well as being a director for Irelandia, a family-owned investment company. With Irelandia he was involved in the launches of such airlines as Tiger Airways and AeroBus.

Cathal died yesterday at his home in Celbridge, Co Kildare, in the company of his children Cillian, Claudia, Danielle and Cameron, his mother Mairead and brothers Declan and Shane.

Friends and colleagues expressed surprise at his passing, commenting that at the funeral of his father, who had also been diagnosed with cancer, ten weeks previously he had “seemed fine.” Cathal had also recently begun regular trips to Italy, where he had become interested in the performing arts.

Ray MacSharry, a long-serving Ryanair director, described Cathal as “invaluable” to the air carrier’s “continuing success”. Michael O’Leary, CEO of the company, called him “one of life’s originals”.

“He was bright, charming, witty and tremendous company,” Mr O’Leary went on. “He was also an extremely skilled pilot, having become one of the youngest ever captains on the Boeing 747 aircraft, which he flew for Air Lanka in the early 1980s. Cathal’s vision, his expertise and his dedication to aircraft safety was pivotal to the development of Ryanair, and to our 22-year safety record.

“Cathal was one of Ireland’s aviation pioneers. He was a comet who shone brightly in our lives and has passed away at a tragically early age. We will all be much the poorer for the loss of his talent, his ability and his friendship,” Mr O’Leary concluded. “His vision, his expertise and his dedication to aircraft safety was pivotal to the development of Ryanair.”

His former fiance Michelle Rocca, mother of Claudia, expressed her sadness at his passing: “He was a wonderful father to Claudia; he and I had a very good relationship over the past number of years and he will be greatly missed by all of us.”

Others described him as a “well-heeled chap”, and one of the few members of Ryanair early in the airline’s history to be able to afford expensive items, such as his luxury car and his high-quality suit. Cathal’s prosperity had often helped Ryanir through financial problems in it’s early stages.

Several colleagues recalled one famous incident where airport authorities had refused to allow an aircraft he was piloting to be refueled unless it was paid for up front due to an unpaid bill. When Cathal was informed of the issue, he produced his gold credit card to pay for the fuel.

Many infertile American women want sex selection

Friday, March 11, 2005Many infertile American women would choose the sex of their next child if given the option.

A survey of 561 women being treated for infertility has found that 41% would use sex selection if it were offered at no cost.

Contradicting fears that such sex selection would cause gender imbalance, the survey found that women with no children would choose baby girls and boys in approximately equal numbers.

Furthermore, women with only daughters wanted to select a male child while women with only sons wanted to select a female child.

“Sex selection is a topic that’s almost taboo for physicians to talk about,” says study lead author Tarun Jain of the University of Illinois at Chicago. “Prior to this study, there has been no data to indicate what the demand might be.”

Of 561 survey respondents, 229 would want to select the sex of their future child.

Among these, 45% had no children and 48% had children of all the same sex.

Half would choose to select the sex of their next child even if they had to bear the cost.

About 55% would choose sperm separation, 41% would choose preimplantation genetic diagnosis and 4% would choose neither.

Sex selection is controversial. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists opposes it for nonmedical reasons and so does the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics.

The American Society of Reproductive Medicine supports it for nonmedical reasons for family gender balancing provided methods used are safe and effective.

“As the techniques gain more popularity, physicians will have to decide if they will offer the procedure to patients with and without children,” says Jain.

The research is reported in the journal Fertility and Sterility.
