At least fifteen dead after stampede at Mali mosque

Friday, February 26, 2010

According to a government official, at least 26 people were killed in a stampede on Thursday at a historic mosque in the northwestern city of Timbuktu, Mali.

“There were 26 killed and 40 wounded,” Oumar Sangare, the Internal Ministry spokesman, told Reuters. However, other news agency reports put the death toll as low as fifteen.

An official, who requested to remain anonymous, said the accident could have begun as a result of renovation work on the Djingareyber mosque—which is made primarily of mud, and was built in the fourteenth century. Construction work blocked off some of the roads, and that could have been a factor in the incident. “The mosque is being renovated, financed by the Aga Khan, and the work is carried out by South African specialists,” the official told the Agence France-Presse (AFP) news agency.

“Because of these renovations, the passage on the north side of the mosque is closed off. On that side, to get through, the faithful found an improvised alleyway. But the alley couldn’t take the number of people using it. So there was a stampede. Somebody shouted ‘someone has died’ and panic took over,” the same official went on to say.

Others have remarked that rescue services responded “very quickly” to the stampede, and helped the “many injured.”

The Xinhua news agency reports the stampede started when an elderly woman fell in one of the town streets near the city’s main mosque, where a sermon was being conducted in front of a large crowd; a passersby then rushed to assist the woman, apparently disrupting the crowd’s movement and causing the stampede.

“People were circling the mosque, a ritual at each Mouloud [the observance of the Prophet Mohammed’s birthday] and there was a huge crowd build up,” commented Mohamed Bandjougou, one of the witnesses to the event, to AFP by telephone. “There were at least fifteen dead. The bodies were taken to the morgue.”

Authorities warned the number of injured may actually be higher than reported, saying that “we cannot rule out the fact that the number of those injured will increase because some of them are still hiding in their homes instead of coming to the hospital.” A hospital source commented that some of the people hurt were in critical condition, and needed to be evacuated to the capital, Bamako, as soon as possible.

The mosque’s imam, who gave his name as Asseyuti, commented on the incident. “We’re in mourning. What happened is a real trauma. We accept the will of God. He gives us life, he takes it away,” he said.

According to an official statement, Malian president Amandou Toumani Toure is traveling to Timbuktu from Bamako in light of the stampede.

Oil from Gulf spill reaches major current

Wednesday, May 19, 2010

US scientists say that oil from the spill in the Gulf of Mexico has reached the Loop Current, which could propel the oil towards the coast of Florida.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), limited amounts of oil have entered the current, and could reach Florida’s coast in as few as six days, although it would be highly diluted by the time it did so. Other estimates place the time before oil reaches Florida as closer to ten days.

Satellite images show oil moving south from the main slick into the current, which is a rapidly-moving body of water that flows from the Caribbean Sea towards the Atlantic Ocean. The speed of the current is predicted to disperse the oil that is picked up, which would lead to difficulties in tracking it.

NOAA qualified their warning by saying that the amount of oil in question is a small percentage of the total spilled, most of which is to the north of the current. The agency’s Scientific Support Coordinator, Charlie Henry, said that “[t]here is some light oil filling the loop current,” though he said the agency “expect[s] it to degrade before it comes close to threatening South Florida.”

Asbestos controversy aboard Scientology ship Freewinds

Friday, May 16, 2008

Controversy has arisen over the reported presence of blue asbestos on the MV Freewinds, a cruise ship owned by the Church of Scientology. According to the Saint Martin newspaper The Daily Herald and the shipping news journal Lloyd’s List, the Freewinds was sealed in April and local public health officials on the Caribbean island of Curaçao where the ship is docked began an investigation into the presence of asbestos dust on the ship. Former Scientologist Lawrence Woodcraft supervised work on the ship in 1987, and attested to the presence of blue asbestos on the Freewinds in an affidavit posted to the Internet in 2001. Woodcraft, a licensed architect by profession, gave a statement to Wikinews and commented on the recent events.

According to The Daily Herald, the Freewinds was in the process of being renovated by the Curaçao Drydock Company. The article states that samples taken from paneling in the ship were sent to the Netherlands, where an analysis revealed that they “contained significant levels of blue asbestos”. An employee of the Curaçao Drydock Company told Radar Online in an April 30 article that the Freewinds has been docked and sealed, and confirmed that an article about asbestos ran in the local paper.

Lloyd’s List reported that work on the interior of the Freewinds was suspended on April 27 after health inspectors found traces of blue asbestos on the ship. According to Lloyd’s List, Frank Esser, Curaçao Drydock Company’s interim director, joined Curaçao’s head of the department of labor affairs Christiene van der Biezen along with the head of the local health department Tico Ras and two inspectors in an April 25 inspection of the ship. “We are sending someone so that they can tell us what happened, where it came from, since when it has been there,” said Panama Maritime Authority’s director of merchant marine Alfonso Castillero in a statement to Lloyd’s List.

The Church of Scientology purchased the ship, then known as the Bohème, in 1987, through an organization called Flag Ship Trust. After being renovated and refitted, it was put into service in June 1988. The ship is used by the Church of Scientology for advanced Scientology training in “Operating Thetan” levels, as well as for spiritual retreats for its members. Curaçao has been the ship’s homeport since it was purchased by the Church of Scientology.

According to his 2001 statement, Lawrence Woodcraft had been an architect in London, England since 1975, and joined Scientology’s elite “Sea Organization” (Sea Org) in 1986. He wrote that he was asked by the Sea Org to work on the Freewinds in 1987, and during his work on the ship “noticed a powdery blue fibrous substance approximately 1 ½” thick between the paint and the steel wall,” which he believed to be asbestos. He also discovered what he thought was blue asbestos in other parts of the ship, and reported his findings to Church of Scientology executives. Woodcraft discussed his experiences in a 2001 interview published online by the Lisa McPherson Trust, a now-defunct organization which was critical of the Church of Scientology.

The Freewinds regularly inspects the air quality on board and always meets or exceeds US standards.

Church of Scientology spokeswoman Karin Pouw responded to Radar Online about the asbestos reports, in an email published in an article in Radar on May 1. “The Freewinds regularly inspects the air quality on board and always meets or exceeds US standards,” said Pouw. She stated that two inspections performed in April “confirmed that the air quality is safe,” and asserted that the inspections revealed the Freewinds satisfies standards set by the United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the U.S. Clean Air Act.

Pouw told Radar that “The Freewinds will be completing its refit on schedule.” The Church of Scientology-affiliated organization Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) had been planning a cruise aboard the Freewinds scheduled for May 8, but according to Radar an individual who called the booking number for the cruise received a message that the cruise had been delayed due to ongoing work on the ship. Citing an article in the Netherlands Antilles newspaper Amigoe, Radar reported on May 6 that a team from the United States and supervised by an independent bureau from the Netherlands traveled to Curaçao in order to remove asbestos from the Freewinds.

…if the Church of Scientology claims to have removed the blue asbestos, I just don’t see how, it’s everywhere. You would first have to remove all the pipes, plumbing, a/c ducts, electrical wiring etc. etc. just a maze of stuff.

“I stand by everything I wrote in my 2001 affidavit,” said Lawrence Woodcraft in an exclusive statement given to Wikinews. Woodcraft went on to state: “I would also comment that if the Church of Scientology claims to have removed the blue asbestos, I just don’t see how, it’s everywhere. You would first have to remove all the pipes, plumbing, a/c ducts, electrical wiring etc. etc. just a maze of stuff. Also panelling as well, basically strip the ship back to a steel hull. Also blue asbestos is sprayed onto the outer walls and then covered in paint. It’s in every nook and cranny.”

Many Scientologist celebrities have spent time aboard the Freewinds, including Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes, John Travolta, Kelly Preston, Chick Corea, Lisa Marie Presley, Catherine Bell, Kate Ceberano, and Juliette Lewis. Now magazine reported that Tom Cruise has been urged to seek medical attention regarding potential asbestos exposure, however a representative for Cruise stated he has “absolutely no knowledge” of the recent asbestos controversy. Cruise, Holmes, Travolta and Preston have celebrated birthdays and other events on the Freewinds.

There is not now and never has been a situation of asbestos exposure on the Freewinds.

In a May 15 statement to the United Kingdom daily newspaper Metro, a representative for the Church of Scientology said that “There is not now and never has been a situation of asbestos exposure on the Freewinds.” The Asbestos and Mesothelioma Center notes that agencies have recommended anyone who has spent time on the Freewinds consult with their physician to determine if possible asbestos exposure may have affected their health.

Raw blue asbestos is the most hazardous form of asbestos, and has been banned in the United Kingdom since 1970. Blue asbestos fibers are very narrow and thus easily inhaled, and are a major cause of mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a form of cancer which can develop in the lining of the lungs and chest cavity, the lining of the abdominal cavity, or the pericardium sac surrounding the heart. The cancer is incurable, and can manifest over 40 years after the initial exposure to asbestos.

“This is the most dangerous type of asbestos because the fibres are smaller than the white asbestos and can penetrate the lung more easily,” said toxicologist Dr. Chris Coggins in a statement published in OK! Magazine. Dr. Coggins went on to note that “Once diagnosed with mesothelioma, the victim has six months to a year to live. It gradually reduces lung function until the victim is no longer able to breathe and dies.”

Benefits Of Ice Making Machines

Submitted by: Jake D. Darren

Their design is such that to provide relatively low temperature refrigeration, between the ranges of ten to thirty two degrees. These evaporator temperatures make the ice by accumulating it on some type of evaporator surface. After defrost the ice is caught and saved though the process known as harvest cycle. The application used in refrigeration is use of tube, fin evaporators and clearing of the ice making machines build up on the evaporator through the process of defrost cycle. There are commercial ones that freeze ice in cans others are small for household use which are operated with ease.

These machines are customized to make ice in other forms like blocks, plates and ice flakes for commercial purposes. Others are developed to package the ice after it is made. This is though the integration with package items which are air cooled and located where the correct airflow across the condenser.

Water is used to cool the condenser of the package of by use of waste water systems. However, a drain is provided for capturing the water from the melting ice any that may overflow from the process. This achieves better results.

The ice making process also requires a holding machine that puts the ice in bags with a temperature below the freezing point. The machine assembles the bags in one position in order to be sold to the consumers. These types of machines are available in the service stations or convenience stores. However, the installation of these machines requires ample supply of water and electricity and other thing like a drain for the ice bins. The package ice machine makes ice flakes and other forms of cubes ice. This machine used in motels commercial, kitchens and hotels.

These flakes are thin pieces of ice made by a vertical cylinder surrounded by the evaporator on the outside. They are formed inside the cylinder by water maintenance inside the cylinder. An auger adds pressure to the ice moving it upwards though small openings near the top after shaving it off the interior of the evaporator. The machine has a constant harvest cycle provided the compressor and auger are operating. These machines are fitted to refrigeration systems in supermarkets.

Some manufactures use stainless steel in making of ice making surfaces of these machines. Copper also forms some of the innovative evaporator surfaces that enables the transfer of heat. The evaporators of these machines are expected to be very clean and scar free. In case the auger touches, the evaporator it causes failure of the machine and the anger must be replaced.

Conclusively, the mechanism used in these machines is very fascinating and interesting. It has been though successive development of these on this machine that the technology nowadays is providing more complex ones. There have been also some other introduction of other machines like tube ones.

The power consumption of these machines is reduced and the time consumed in making the products. Therefore, technology have led to quantum leaps in the field of engineering these ones and providing the services to the consumers. One should visit several site online to determine the best ice making machines.

Former U.S. Presidential candidate Gene Amondson dies following a stroke

Wednesday, July 22, 2009

Preacher, painter and prohibition activist Gene Amondson, best known for his runs as the U.S. presidential nominee for one faction of the Prohibition Party in 2004 and as the party’s de facto nominee in 2008, died yesterday surrounded by his four children after falling into a coma following a stroke. He was 65 years old.

Amondson was part of the Prohibition Party split in 2004 that led to two tickets. Although he received few votes, Amondson finished in third place in four Louisiana parishes, the best showing by a Prohibition Party candidate since 1960. The leader of the counter ticket, Earl Dodge, died in 2007 while campaigning for the party’s 2008 nomination, leaving no opposition to Amondson as the party’s leader.

He was strongly opposed to the sale of alcohol. As an activist, he filmed documentaries and held demonstrations supporting his cause.

Amondson made many appearances on television, including two visits to the Oprah Winfrey Show as a painter and was interviewed by Jon Stewart on the Daily Show during his 2004 run.

He was also interviewed by Wikinews in June 2008, during his second presidential campaign.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 25 at Amondson’s home town of Vashon Island, Washington.

Loss Mitigator: Tips For Working With Mortgage Lenders To Prevent Foreclosure

By Simon Volkov

A loss mitigator specializes in helping homeowners struggling to maintain their mortgage payments. Most mortgage lenders have a loss mitigation department to help borrowers devise a plan to get back on track. Mitigators review borrowers’ financial records to determine available options to prevent foreclosure.

A loss mitigator is usually employed by the bank. However, independent mitigators can be retained to work on behalf of the lender or borrower. When banks use in-house loss mitigators, there is no fee for the service. When lenders do not have a mitigation department, homeowners will need to retain the services of an independent agent.

Bank loss mitigators mediate between lenders and borrowers. In the case of short sales, mitigators will also work with potential buyers of the property.

When homeowners default on their mortgage loan, mitigators usually offer a loan modification. If borrowers are able to maintain future payments, banks can modify the loan to permanently alter the terms.

Loan modifications are somewhat flexible and can be altered to help borrowers cure mortgage arrears and remain current on future payments. Some lenders require borrowers to pay delinquent amounts in full before entering into a loan modification. Others require partial payment of past due amounts.

On rare occasions, mortgage lenders will temporarily suspend or reduce mortgage payments through a real estate forbearance agreement. These payments can be rolled to the end of the mortgage note; extending payment terms.

When homeowners do not qualify for loan modifications, loss mitigators might offer the option of a short sale. Short sales involve selling the property for less than borrowers owe on their home mortgage loan.

Borrowers must meet certain criteria before banks grant short sale approval. The primary requirements include owing more on the loan than the property is worth and not having any accrued home equity.

The process of short selling is complex and involves taking an audit of borrowers’ finances. Banks will not authorize a short sale until they are convinced the borrower does not possess any assets which could be used to repay the loan.

Every bank handles short sales differently, but requires the same type of information and financial documentation. Borrowers must submit a short sale hardship letter which outlines the events that caused them to fall behind with mortgage payments.

Oftentimes, loss mitigators base their decision to accept or deny short sale approval based on the letter of hardship. Others require borrowers to submit a short sale packet consisting of financial records along with their hardship letter.

Regardless of the short sale process used it is imperative to provide requested documents in a timely fashion. Loss mitigators are overwhelmed with caseloads and appreciate working with homeowners who are organized, prepared and meet deadlines.

If mortgage lenders do not offer the option to short sale or rejects borrowers request, the last option is foreclosure. It is important to obtain a deed in lieu of foreclosure whenever possible. A deed in lieu means the bank accepts the sale price as payment in full. Without a deed in lieu, banks can issue a deficiency judgment for the difference between the sale price and loan balance. Once a judgment is issued, it remains on credit reports until paid in full.

Although loss mitigators do not make final decisions, they can make or break deals. Always be respectful and polite while working through the foreclosure prevention process or obtaining short sale approval. Take time to develop a working relationship and provide requested documents in a timely fashion. Doing so can go a long way in achieving a successful outcome.

Toyota recalls 1.7m cars after new concerns

Wednesday, January 26, 2011

Car manufacturer Toyota is to recall almost 1.7 million cars in two simultaneous recalls, that include the Toyota Avensis and Lexus IS 250, after concerns over fuel systems, which, if combined, amount to the biggest Toyota recall for six years.

Japan’s transport ministry stated it was possible for slight cracks to appear in fuel pipes in Avensis models, which may widen if the cars continue to be used. In the United Kingdom, Toyota GB are offering free repairs, which are expected to take around four and a half hours each. The Lexus IS 250 is involved in a separate recall, with around 280 thousand models outside of Japan being recalled over a faulty fuel pressure sensor, which can possibly come loose, causing a fuel leak.

The Managing Director of Toyota GB stated “We are committed to putting the customer first and have a total focus on the quality of all our products. We will liaise with our customers to carry out the repair procedures as efficiently as possible, with minimal disruption”.

Toyota has recalled over 16 million cars globally since late 2009.

Darling announces UK budget for 2009

Thursday, April 23, 2009

The United Kingdom Chancellor of the Exchequer, Alistair Darling, yesterday announced the 2009 budget. The budget is an annual audit of the nation’s finances, and decides what should be done with taxpayers’ money.

The chancellor fell under scorn for his GDP growth forecasts, which are considered to be too optimistic in predicting that Britain will bounce back from its weakest economic performance since the end of the second world war. Darling forecast GDP growth of 3.5% in 2011, even after he was made to downgrade his predictions. He expects a record expansion of 1.25% next year, but chief UK economist Howard Archer disagrees, calling Darling’s predictions “mildly optimistic in the near term and much more optimistic in the long term.”

Was the increase in the ISA limit “too little, too late”?
Add or view comments

His plans for savers and pensioners, however, were commended by many, though was also criticised by a large portion of the populace. In the budget, Darling increased the amount that savers can put into an Individual Savings Account (ISA) from £7,200 to £10,200, of which £5,100 can be saved in cash. These increased limits will be available only to people aged over 50 from 6 October this year, and will not be available to everyone until 6 April next year. A number of financial experts described the move as being “too little, too late”, and Rumina Hassam, of price comparison website uSwitch.com, said: “The government’s decision to increase the cash ISA limit by £1,500 to £5,100 for the over 50’s is a just another kick in the teeth for the majority of savers as they will have to wait even longer to benefit. There is no doubt that savers have been sacrificed as a result of the plummeting base rate, bringing savings rates to an all time low.”
