Firefighters rescue nearly a dozen animals in Buffalo, New York house fire

Friday, June 22, 2007

Buffalo, New York —A three alarm fire at a house owned by John and Evelyn Bencinich, two of the initiators of a lawsuit filed against the Elmwood Village Hotel proposal in Buffalo, required firefighters to rescue eight cats and two dogs in Buffalo, New York today.

At about 8:30 (eastern time) firefighters were called to the home on 48 Granger Place to put out a fire that had started in the basement. It quickly spread to the first floor where the main bathroom was destroyed. The fire did not spread to the second floor or attic.

Initial calls said that many animals were inside the house and firefighters quickly worked to rescue all the cats and dogs. At least one cat and one dog had to receive CPR and oxygen, but both are reported to be in stable condition. At least 3 cats are unaccounted for, but after a search of the house, the cats were not believed to have been inside at the time the fire started.

One elderly woman, Anna Bencinich, the mother of Evelyn, was rescued by neighbors who helped her from the burning house.

“There was smoke all over the house. The fire started in the basement and spread to a small portion of the first floor. Two firefighters were injured while fighting the fire and were transported to Erie County Medical Center,” said Division Fire Chief Thomas Ashe who also said that sections of the kitchen wall at the back of the house had to be torn out to stop the fire from spreading through the walls.

One firefighter is being treated for bite injuries to his face that he received while attempting to rescue a dog. The other firefighter was treated for injuries he received to his hand, which was believed to have been caused by glass or a cat scratching him. The names of the injured firefighters are not known. The injuries are said to not be life threatening.

According to witness reports, the home owners had a new water heater installed just last week, but it is not known if the fire was caused by the heater.

“We believe the fire was caused by an electrical (malfunction). An investigation is being conducted,” said Battalion Chief Joe Fahey who also added that they did not believe arson was the cause.

Al Sharpton speaks out on race, rights and what bothers him about his critics

Monday, December 3, 2007

At Thanksgiving dinner David Shankbone told his white middle class family that he was to interview Reverend Al Sharpton that Saturday. The announcement caused an impassioned discussion about the civil rights leader’s work, the problems facing the black community and whether Sharpton helps or hurts his cause. Opinion was divided. “He’s an opportunist.” “He only stirs things up.” “Why do I always see his face when there’s a problem?”

Shankbone went to the National Action Network’s headquarters in Harlem with this Thanksgiving discussion to inform the conversation. Below is his interview with Al Sharpton on everything from Tawana Brawley, his purported feud with Barack Obama, criticism by influential African Americans such as Clarence Page, his experience running for President, to how he never expected he would see fifty (he is now 53). “People would say to me, ‘Now that I hear you, even if I disagree with you I don’t think you’re as bad as I thought,'” said Sharpton. “I would say, ‘Let me ask you a question: what was “bad as you thought”?’ And they couldn’t say. They don’t know why they think you’re bad, they just know you’re supposed to be bad because the right wing tells them you’re bad.”

FanFiction.Net adult content purge felt across fandom two weeks on

Saturday, June 16, 2012

Two weeks ago, FanFiction.Net purged the site of much of the adult content, surprising many fan fiction readers and writers; leaving several archives on the Internet unprepared for a deluge of new users, problems continuing to this day. FanFiction.Net removed around 62,000 stories after a change allowing writers under the age of eighteen to register.

FanFiction.Net spelled out the reasons for their purge on the front page of the site:

Please note we would like to clarify the content policy we have in place since 2002. FanFiction.Net follows the Fiction Rating system ranging from Fiction K to Fiction M. Although Fiction Ratings goes up to Fiction MA, FanFiction.Net since 2002 has not allowed Fiction MA rated content which can contain adult/explicit content on the site. FanFiction.Net only accepts content in the Fiction K through Fiction M range. Fiction M can contain adult language, themes and suggestions. Detailed descriptions of physical interaction of sexual or violent nature is considered Fiction MA and has not been allowed on the site since 2002.

According to alixe75 on LiveJournal’s ffdotnetrants, FanFiction.Net deleted 2,002 Naruto stories, 1,497 Twilight stories, 1,256 Harry Potter stories, 670 Glee stories, 364 Inuyasha stories, 364 Hetalia – Axis Powers stories, 282 Kingdom Hearts, 213 Pokemon stories, 143 Yu-Gi-Oh stories, 127 Dragon Ball Z stories and 47 Doctor Who stories amongst others. rahirah on Dreamwidth provided another statistic, “Approximately 11% of all BtVS [Buffy the Vampire Slayer] stories were zapped. That may not sound like much, but FFnet is big – that comes to thousands of stories.” feckless-muse on Dreamwidth reported the purge included banning users. Despite the purge, Alexa reports no drop in traffic to FanFiction.Net.

Longer Trailers To Be Trialled

Submitted by: Laura B

OSE European are one of the UKs leading providers in worldwide logistics solutions, we specialise in UK and European Express although we also provide International Air and Sea Freight, Hazardous, Refrigerated and Special Assistance options as well high quality collection, delivery and warehousing.

Starting next year, a 10 year trial will begin, testing the suitability of 1800 longer semi-trailers on UK roads.

The decision has been made by the Department for Transport to trial 900 semi-trailers at an increased length of 2.05m and 900 semi-trailers at an increased length of 1m over the current 13.6m maximum.

However the decision to trial the longer vehicles have raised debate as to whether this is really the best way for the development of the road transport industry.

The opposing concern is over the environmental and social impact longer vehicles will have with increases in carbon emissions and noise pollution predicted. They believe that more freight should be shifted from the roads to the more environmentally friendly railways.

However there needs to great investment put into the rail infrastructure which has suffered for many years with budget cuts and a lessening in European freight due to the UKs current rail set up.

The shadow transport secretary, Maria Eagle, strongly opposes the trial. She said: “Communities up and down the country will be appalled that ministers have given the green light to longer HGVs coming through their towns and villages. This is the wrong decision and shows just how out of touch this Tory-led government is with local communities.

Ministers should think again and bring forward a coherent strategy for shifting more freight onto our railways, reducing carbon emissions and improving road safety.”

The decision to trial longer road haulage vehicles has also proven to be unpopular with a number of road transport companies who have complained over unfairness to those still operating by the current legislations and not operating the longer vehicles.

However the Department for Transport has responded to those concerns by placing a cap on the number of trailers road transport companies can operate in order to maintain fairness.

Despite this cap, Jack Semple, director of policy at the Road Haulage Association, said: We welcome the commitment to work to minimise any disadvantage there might be to medium-sized and smaller transport firms.

It is clear that the industry is split on the issue of longer trailers, with the majority of transport companies opposed to them being allowed on our roads.

Supporters of the trial claim that concerns over increased carbon emissions are unjust and that the longer trailers will in fact reduce carbon emissions as well as increasing productivity by as much as 15%. The Freight Transport Association announced that the trial is good for business and good for carbon emissions and a leading road haulage operator believes that the longer trailers will fit well within their policy to develop sustainable distribution solutions.

The trial will begin next year and will undergo annual checks as well as a four-monthly assessment covering the operational safety, manoeuvrability and economy of the longer trailers.
