Should You Do A High Intensity Workout?

Submitted by: Gray Rollins

There is no valid reason that a healthy person should maintain a low intensity exercise regimen unless they simply aren t really interested in seeing real results. A low intensity workout, defined as exercises during which your heart rate is around 60% of its maximum rate, are fairly inefficient for anything other than very slow and gradual weight loss. They won t help you boost your metabolism, they won t aid significantly in building muscle mass, and they don t do much for strength and endurance.

A high intensity workout, which is defined as exercises which push your heart rate up to 75% of its maximum or more, is infinitely better for nearly every aspect of your overall health.

You can determine your maximum heart rate by taking your current age away from 220. So, for example, if you re 50 at the moment, then your maximum heart rate is 170 beats per minute. Don t let the term maximum heart rate fool or scare you. You aren t going to damage your heart if you go up to or over this heart rate.

The 220-age formula is only an estimate and, depending on your individual physiology, you may find yourself exceeding that number. Since it s nearly impossible to damage a healthy heart by exercise, that s nothing to worry about.

Low intensity exercises are beneficial for warming up and cooling down, before and after high intensity phases. Low intensity exercises are also good for the elderly, anyone recovering from an illness or injury, someone who is significantly overweight and out of shape, or someone who is just beginning to workout.

Sadly, a good number of healthy people who could be receiving major benefits from high intensity workouts are stuck doing inferior low intensity exercises because a personal trainer has recommended it. Generally, a trainer would recommend the less effective low intensity exercises for one of two reasons: confusion or personal protection.

Personal protection simply means that a person is very unlikely to injure themselves during a low intensity workout so a trainer who is particularly paranoid about lawsuits may recommend the safer route. Most trainers who would do this are either entirely unsure of their abilities, planning to be absent for their clients workout period, or simply unfit to be a trainer.

The confusion route is more common and more difficult to explain. Both intensity levels burn calories and, of those calories, a percentage of them are fat calories. Technically speaking, a low intensity workout burns a higher percentage (50%) of fat calories than a high intensity workout (40%). Because of this, some trainers will recommend the workout wherein 50% of the burned calories are fat.

Sadly, this doesn t actually result in the client burning more fat and, thus, the confusion.

A high intensity workout burns a higher number or calories overall than a low intensity workout. Generally speaking, a smaller percentage of a larger number is often times more than a higher percentage of a smaller number.

Let us suppose that you burn 100 calories by walking for 20 minutes. Walking is a low intensity exercise, so 50% of those calories are fat, meaning that your 20 minutes of work has succeeded in burning 50 fat calories. Let us also suppose that you burn 160 calories during 10 minutes of a high intensity exercise. Of those 160 calories, 40% of the burned calories are fat which means that your 10 minutes of work burned 64 calories.

Despite the smaller percentage, in our example you burn 14 more fat calories in half the time. Now, half the time doesn t mean half the work because those 10 minutes are at a higher intensity. However, half the time is still half the time.

If you re really serious about losing weight, make the bulk of your exercise regimen high intensity and bookend it with warm up and cool down low intensity exercises.

Four new breeds in the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show

Tuesday, February 12, 2008

This year, four breeds of dogs are competing for the first time in the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, at Madison Square Garden in New York City, United States.

The new breeds making their Westminister debuts this year, are the Plott, a hunting hound originally bred by two German immigrant brothers in North Carolina; the Tibetan Mastiff, once described by Marco Polo as “tall as a donkey with a voice as powerful as that of a lion.”; the Beauceron, a herding dog originally bred to herd flocks of sheep in France, later used to sniff out landmines and send messages during the World Wars; and the Swedish Vallhund, a breed dating back to the time of the Vikings, used on farms to catch vermin, herd cattle, and as a guard dog, noted for its double coat and harness markings.

This brings the number of unique breeds competing in the famous dog show to 169.

The Plott, the Beauceron, and the Vallhund were shown on Monday. The Tibetan Mastiff will be shown tonight as part of the Working Group.

Wikinews interviews 2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor Candidate Wayne Tseng

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Thursday, October 22, 2020

2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor candidate Wayne Tseng answered some questions about his campaign for the upcoming election from Wikinews. The Lord Mayor election in the Australian city is scheduled to take place this week.

Tseng runs a firm called eTranslate, which helps software developers to make the software available to the users. In the candidate’s questionnaire, Tseng said eTranslate had led to him working with all three tiers of the government. He previously belonged to the Australian Liberal Party, but has left since then, to run for mayorship as an independent candidate.

Tseng is of Chinese descent, having moved to Australia with his parents from Vietnam. Graduated in Brisbane, Tseng received his PhD in Melbourne and has been living in the city, he told Wikinews. Tseng also formed Chinese Precinct Chamber of Commerce, an organisation responsible for many “community bond building initiatives”, the Lord Mayor candidate told Wikinews.

Tseng discussed his plans for leading Melbourne, recovering from COVID-19, and “Democracy 2.0” to ensure concerns of minorities in the city were also heard. Tseng also focused on the importance of the multi-culture aspect and talked about making Melbourne the capital of the aboriginals. Tseng also explained why he thinks Melbourne is poised to be a world city by 2030.

Tseng’s deputy Lord Mayor candidate Gricol Yang is a Commercial Banker and works for ANZ Banking Group.

Currently, Sally Capp is the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, the Victorian capital. Capp was elected as an interim Lord Mayor in mid-2018 after the former Lord Mayor Robert Doyle resigned from his position after sexual assault allegations. Doyle served as the Lord Mayor of Melbourne for almost a decade since 2008.

US warns Spain of Christmas bus ramming plot in Barcelona

Tuesday, December 25, 2018

Police in Barcelona, Spain yesterday were searching, according to reports, for a Moroccan man suspected of plotting an attack using a bus as a weapon during Christmas holidays. The United States State Department alerted the nation to the suspected plans.

Las Ramblas, the scene of an Islamic State van ramming attack in the city in 2017, became the site of heavy police activity. The US State Department urged its citizens to be vigilant when in the area. Police were also patrolling a Christmas market at the nearby Plaza Cataluna, a major square.

Catalonia’s police force is the Mossos d’Esquadra. Based on the intelligence received, Spanish newspaper El País reported, they were hunting for a 30-year-old bus driver from Casablanca, with only a minor criminal record in Spain. Police were performing spot checks on bus drivers in an effort to trace him.

The 2015 attack, which killed over a dozen, was also conducted by a Moroccan; within hours, five linked assailants had conducted a similar second attack elsewhere in the city. This Friday saw the arrest of a 35-year-old Moroccan male suspected of working for the Islamic State in Syria. The Spanish Interior Ministry has left its terror alert level at four on a five-point scale. Catalan Interior Minister Miquel Buch said the situation was being taken seriously; the national Interior Ministry, meanwhile, indicated enhanced security was already in force for the final days of the year on a precautionary basis.

Reports indicated the suspect was not known to be currently in Spain.

Can Bbq’s Be Deemed Healthy}

Submitted by: Paula Gerie

Healthy eating and weight loss is a hot topic dominating our time; everything we do and everywhere we go has now become affected by how healthy it is. When the summer months spring upon, it is important that we are all looking and feeling the part. The entire year has now become dedicated to achieving that ideal summer body we all crave. But how do we continue with this regime we have devoted ourselves to once summer has dawned upon us? All of those food drenched BBQs hosted by the family and days out dining with friends will surely put a spanner in the works, wont it? Possibly not!

BBQs such as the Weber Genesis e330 or a Weber Spirit Premium S320 which can be purchased from Weber accessories online, can actually offer the ideal opportunity for us to eat healthier (believe it or not!). Not only is it guaranteed to taste great, but food can be whipped up in a matter of minutes; in fact, the chances are it will probably take longer to flare the BBQ up!

Summer is the perfect time to pull out that mean grilling machines and get the family and friends over for a good old knees up! Unsurprisingly we say BBQ and immediately thoughts are damaging; Sausages, wings, burgers, calories and fats?! Worry not, your thoughts got completely carried away and forgot about the amazing chicken breasts, fish fillets, fresh vegetables and fruit! Yes, thats right, we said fruit! All of these, when cooked will not fail to tickle your taste buds! Even BBQs have the potential to deliver healthy and nutritious meals without an ounce of guilt flying your way. If you deem anything from kebabs (chicken and vegetable), to marinated chicken and fish, asparagus and potatoes unhealthy, you are not entirely normal and probably cannot be helped. We joke of course! On a serious note, these are all types of foods that can be cooked on the BBQ in no time at all and will not threaten your health in the slightest. Dont forget you can buy your own sides such as low fat potato salads and coleslaw to accompany main meals as well making a green, leafy salad complete with a delicious dressing.

And now you are no doubt thinking Well, what about dessert?! You lot arent easily pleased are you?! Well you cannot go wrong with a fruit salad on a blistering hot summers day! Slice and dice some fine, fresh fruit, anything you fancy and finish the dish with a cool and creamy, low fat yoghurt. Simple! Alternatively, whilst the BBQ is cooling down, fruits can be wrapped up in foil, placed on the grill for several minutes and left to cook. As the fruit cooks, juices will begin to flow, leaving you with a warm, sticky fruit salad which can be topped with a dash of syrup for extra flavouring.

Experimenting with your BBQ is the way forward; cooking can be fun and exciting as well as healthy. Never let the prospect of a stereotypical BBQ get the better of you, there are always alternatives! Low fat, flavoursome and nutritious foods pave the way for a great BBQ. Try to avoid BBQ sauces when cooking healthy meals and stick to herbs and spices to marinade your meats; these will leave chicken tasting tender and full of flavour. It is a common fact that grilling is an ideal way of cooking that reduces fat; cooking lean meats with little marinade and serving with vegetables will lend you the perfect, healthy BBQ.

A compilation of brief news reports for Monday, May 7, 2007.

A 30 meter section of a gas pipeline in Luka (near Kiev) in Ukraine has been destroyed by an explosion. Although supplies to Europe via this pipeline have stopped, Ukrainian Energy Minister Georgi E. Boyko said that supplies to Europe would not be affected.

“There are no changes in volumes of gas being transported,” Yuri Korolchuk said. “Volumes due to pass through the damaged section are being redirected through the Soyuz pipeline.”

Normal flows are reported in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Romania.

Copper prices are rising. Between record copper imports from China, and a mining strike in Peru, the prices have climbed to over $8100 (United States dollars) a tonne, for a gain of $575 dollars over the last week. However the upward trend is not new, it has been climbing for quite some time. In April 2003, the price of copper was under $2000 a tonne.

The metal market has been tending up due to growth in the Chinese industrial production. This trickles down to the local level, where the buying price at scrap yards is ever climbing, making scrap metal collection a more profitable endeavour for individual people using pick up trucks or other such vehicles to collect and cash in the scrap metal at metal buying yards. It can be collected via agreements with businesses, from the garbage, or, sometimes, by theft.

Copper prices fell today on the NYMEX commodity exchange from US$3.7545 per pound to US$3.7125 based on the July futures contract.

‘The Gates’ opens in New York City

Wednesday, February 16, 2005

New York, New York —On February 12, 2005, at 8:30 a.m., New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg dropped the first piece of fabric in The Gates, a land art project by Christo and Jeanne Claude.

Why Give A Shih Tzu Hair Cut?

By Rebecca A Simpson

The coat on a Shih Tzu dog can grow quickly and it starts growing right when the little guy is born. Shih Tzu dogs are energetic and nervous so if you feel you are up to the task of cutting your dog’s hair then go ahead, but be careful. If you want to have it done by someone then that choice is yours also. But whatever you do make sure you make the right choice for your dog as getting a Shih Tzu hair cut can be a pretty trying experience for any Shih Tzu pup.

You can probably start doing little cutting tasks here and there at around ten weeks or maybe as early as eight weeks if you can get the pup to stand still and there is anything worth cutting. Try brushing them in with cutting their hair so they feel comfortable, as Shih Tzu dogs love to be brushed. Be very careful and always be ready for your Shih Tzu to make any sudden movements. A good age to start thinking about full cuts is around sixteen weeks.

A Shih Tzu has hair and not fur and that is a rare thing in the dog world so you need to treat your Shih Tzu dog’s coat like you would human hair. When you are cutting think of what would be painful and shocking to you and then amplify that by about ten to understand the effect on your dog. Pulling on the hair when you are cutting, or tugging when you are cutting, or using dull scissors that pull out hair instead of cutting it all are very painful for humans and they are even worse on a Shih Tzu. So when you do your Shih Tzu hair cut keep that in mind.

An area you want to always be sure you cut when you are doing your Shih Tzu hair cut is around the eyes. If you do not feel comfortable doing this then take your Shih Tzu to a professional groomer regularly to have the excess hair cut over the eyes. Not only can hair in the eyes get annoying for your Shih Tzu but it can also cause infection so make sure it is taken care of.

Always make sure your Shih Tzu hair cut makes the dog’s coat shorter in the summer and a little longer in the winter. In the summer it needs to be short otherwise your Shih Tzu will start to experience health problems with the heat. In the winter you can leave it as long as you like, but make sure the dog can still run and walk without tripping over its coat. Some people like to leave little pieces of hair so they can attach bows and ribbons, which is common among owners. The dogs, however, do not always like it.

Giving your Shih Tzu a hair cut yourself is just fine but you may want to watch a professional do it first. After you see what goes into doing a proper cut you might come to realize that the money you pay a professional once a month or so is well worth it to get your Shih Tzu hair cut done right.

US soldier who died after serving in Liberia tests negative for Ebola

Wednesday, January 14, 2015

Tests yesterday proved negative for Ebola on the remains of a US soldier who died in Texas after deployment to Liberia. The 24-year-old had been monitoring potential symptoms of the disease.

An initial screen was clear yesterday but a more conclusive test, mandated by the Center for Disease Control, was required. That also proved negative and state and national officials have been appraised.

The Killeen Police Department continues to investigate the soldier’s death. He has not been named publicly. He died at his home near Fort Hood military base. Fort Hood said the soldier had been involved in constructing a hospital to combat Ebola in Africa, and returned to the US on emergency leave earlier this month.

His self-monitoring was routine after deployment to fight Ebola. He was not directly exposed to the disease. One national government official anonymously told reporters Ebola concerns were prompted by a pool of vomit found alongside the deceased.

Home destroyed by fire in Geneva, Florida

Wednesday, December 15, 2010

A mobile home in Seminole County, Florida burned down last night, leaving a man and his dog homeless. The cause of the blaze was determined as accidental.

Firefighters were alerted to a fire in a wooded area of Geneva at around 11 pm local time (0400 UTC) last night. By the time they reached the scene the house had already been destroyed and a brush fire had been started. It took them about two hours to extinguish the fire which engulfed the house and it took about 40 minutes to contain the brush fire. To combat the brush fire the Seminole fire department had to bring out equipment normally used to combat forest fires.

Firefighters were still on the scene up to eight hours later to ensure that the fire did not reignite. The man and his dog escaped from the house, however the man did sustain minor injuries. The Red Cross will assist the man with food, shelter and clothing for a few days.

A State Fire Marshal office investigator revealed that the fire was accidental and was caused by an unattended grill which ignited the house and subsequently the woods.
