Belgian formation talks: King consults incumbent PM

Monday, December 3, 2007

The caretaker prime minister of Belgium, Guy Verhofstadt, reappeared on the political stage today as he accepted the royal request to suggest solutions to the ongoing federal government formation talks.

Recollecting his statement to the press on June 10, 2007, when he recognised his electoral loss and the victory of his opponent Yves Leterme, he told reporters today that he “hadn’t thought nor hoped to face you once more, but the King has asked me to inform him on a short term about possible strategies to deal with the political stalemate in which we have ended up over the last few months.”

Our country is experiencing one of its most severe political crises of the last decades. The elections are six months behind us you see, and the country still doesn’t have a worthy government. Meanwhile, our country’s image is being damaged en socio-economic and daily problems of the people remain unsolved.

Indeed, after 177 days, the country’s political parties have still found no compromise on the roles of the French- and Dutch-language community. Two days ago, Leterme returned to King Albert II to tender his resignation as leader of the formation talks.

The incumbent PM said he would discretely contact the leaders of all democratic parties during the next few days. He said his starting point would be dual: the country needs a considerable reform of its federal status, and there are certain urgent problems that outrange the capacities of the caretaker government dealing with the ongoing affairs.

Verhofstadt called for all involved to take responsibility, in the interest of the country and its citizens.

Polaroid goes bankrupt

Friday, December 19, 2008

Camera company Polaroid has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States. The firm, famed for the introduction of instant photography, says alleged fraud by the founder of their parent group is to blame.

Owned since 2005 by Petters Group Worldwide, Polaroid says that the group’s founder Tom Petters is “under investigation for alleged acts of fraud that have compromised the financial condition of Polaroid.” Authorities believe Petter, currently in police custody, was running fraud worth £3 billion, something he denies.

Petters Group, itself, filed for bankruptcy in October. Both firms now face restructuring, which Polaroid is confident won’t affect daily operations — in fact, the company is “planning for new product launches in 2009,” and claims to have “entered bankruptcy with ample cash reserves sufficient to finance the company’s reorganization under Chapter 11.”

Polaroid has further said that employees will be paid without interruption, and that while members of Petters Group are under investigation for fraud, Polaroid’s management is not. The company, based in Minnesota, also has subsidiaries which will enter bankruptcy with it.

Massachusetts lawmakers enact plan for universal health coverage

Friday, April 7, 2006Legislators in the Massachusetts General Court, their name for the state legislature, approved legislation on Tuesday, April 4, that would make it the first state in the United States to require all residents to have health insurance and impose penalties for non-compliance. Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, a Republican who is expected to run for U.S. President in 2008, is expected to sign the bill.

The bill passed the lower house, the Massachusetts House of Representatives by a vote of 155-2, and unanimously by the state senate. The Democratic Party holds supermajorities in both houses of the legislature.

Among the bill’s provisions are these:

 1. Businesses that employ more than 10 people are required to provide health insurance for all staff or face fines of $295 per year per uninsured worker.
 2. Individuals will be required to enroll in a health plan by July 1, 2007, or face tax penalties.
 3. Health insurers will provide partially to fully subsidized coverage for low-income residents.

At least one other state (Hawaii) requires employers to provide employee health insurance, but no other state holds individuals accountable for coverage.

Factors That Are Encompassed In Productivity Management

By Sam Miller

Productivity management is critical in any business or even in individual endeavors. It is crucial to properly manage productivity trends so that the productivity potential of any company is maximized. As always, there are several factors that need to be considered in productivity management. If addressed and managed properly, these factors will help improve company productivity as a whole and make productivity management a success.

So what is productivity management after all? Productivity management is a way of manipulating and guiding the different process that lead to a very successful and productive system. All aspects in the company that affect revenue and productivity in one way or another are considered in productivity management. Productivity Management has one goal and that is to make sure that productivity levels keep moving forward and that all issues that may cause damage to the overall status of the company are taken care of as soon as possible. Below are the different factors that taken care of in productivity management:

Time is gold. This is a saying that rings true both in life and in business. Time needs to be optimized in order to get as much output as possible. After all, the greater the output for a certain allotted time, the more productive something or someone is. Time Management should be imposed when managing productivity. Activities and projects that take up the most time should be given the amount that is due to it. However, it is easier to deal with smaller and quicker projects as soon as possible to pave the way for the more complicated ones.

A Company’s Manpower is one of its greatest resources! In managing productivity Manpower should also be managed. One of the best ways to manage manpower is to make sure that the employees are satisfied and happy with their condition. Because as they say: A happy man works better. But of course, companies must learn to draw the line between a happy employee and a spoiled one. A happy employee works well because he is stress free and grateful, a spoiled employee is one that has been given his way too many times. As a result, a spoiled employee would refuse to work unless his/her increasing demands are met. Employers should always beware of spoiled employees and these individuals should be confronted as soon as possible.

Another factor in Productivity Management is the Physical resources. A state of the art facility will have a higher productivity rating than facilities that need greater man power to handle. Companies that have modernized their processes will find that they have a higher productivity rating compared with other companies that haven’t. Overall market conditions are also an important factor to consider in productivity management. If the market is down, it then follows that productivity managers find ways to augment the market gap.

These and other factors are to be taken into consideration by companies. Having a good grasp of them will give managers the knowledge to maneuver through any drawbacks that may come their way.

Tuesday, January 2, 2007

A 21-year-old New Zealander, who has not been named, was sexually assaulted by another man early yesterday morning (NZDT) in Wellington, New Zealand. The New Zealand police have described the sexual attack as “prolonged and terrifying”.

The man was first threatened with a weapon at a shopping center located in Riddiford Street, Newtown, Wellington and was then forced into a dark and isolated carpark where the sexual attack occurred.

Gaining Home Security Through Access Control Systems}

Gaining Home Security Through Access Control Systems

by

Kevin Germain

As a society I think we are always concerned about the security surrounding our loved ones. How does your home space protect the family you love and care about? One way that is becoming ever more popular in landscaping design as well as a security feature is fencing that has access control system capabilities. This feature allows the homeowner to regulate who is allowed to enter and exit the property using an access control system, such as a keypad or remote control.

This system of accessing space is not new. It has been used in apartments, hospitals, office building and many more public spaces for a long time. Just recently the expense of the technology involved has made it a more affordable option in home security as well. This option is more feasible now for the average homeowner. The first thing that needs to be in place is a fence around the perimeter of the yard.

Access control system fencing has changes a lot from the days of chain link. Now days homeowners can erect fences in a variety of styles and designs to blend in with their homes naturally aesthetic landscape. Homeowners can choose between fencing that offers complete privacy so no one can view the property. The only issue this causes is that the homeowner also cannot see out. A way around this is by using mirrors strategically placed that allow the property outside of the gate to be viewed. Another option in fencing that offers height is palisade fence which also offers spaces to see through.

On top of the fencing that supports security around the perimeter of the property homeowners need to decide on a gate option. Gate style options vary greatly as well as how they function. Homeowners can choose between a swing gate and a sliding gate. Both options have pros and cons. Design wise they both are incredibly attractive options. Sliding gates require less space to enter and exit and they do not swing out into the space that will be driven through. This is a better option for driveways where space is minimal.

How homeowners choose to gain access through the gate in many different ways. Some like the options of a key pad entry. The down fall of this method is that each time you enter the space you need to roll down the window and push in the code. The upside is that visitors to your home can gain access without having to gain your attention to buzz them in. Each visitor can be set up with an individualized code so that the homeowner can monitor who has had access into their space. The most preferable method is remote control. This allows access with the touch of a button from inside a car or inside the home.

An option to add to the access controlled fence and gate system is security cameras. This is often a strategy utilized by people with small children who play in the yard or for homeowners who travel a lot and are in need of visual piece of mind. Security cameras can be set up to be viewed via the internet. Technology is ever changing and is helping to ease the minds of homeowners that are interested in different types of security options available.
