Presentation   The Euro-Mediterranean Conference in Barcelona (November 1995) marked the beginning of a new stage in relations between European and Mediterranean countries. This conference provided, on the one hand, a meeting point for the various agents in this Region and, on the other hand, a global forum for political discussion with the Mediterranean as the focal point, finally resulting in a new multilateral dimension for Euro-Mediterranean relations.   The main aim of the so-called Barcelona Declaration , which was the result of this whole process, was for political collaboration and safety. In addition, it was also intended to develop suitable conditions for establishing good neighbourly relations between the countries in the Region and provide support for the processes aimed at developing regional and sub-regional cooperation.   Catalonia and Spain have shown particular awareness as far as the Mediterranean is concerned. Therefore, marking the tenth anniversary of the Barcelona Declaration the Government of Catalonia and specifically the Ministry of Health have decided that an International Forum of the Euro-Mediterranean region should be held in order to make progress in political collaboration regarding health.   The aim of this forum is to focus on obtaining better knowledge about the real situation in the Mediterranean area in terms of health by means of discussion and putting forward proposals. In this way health policies will be long-lasting and international collaboration and interchange of knowledge, experience and best practices will be promoted, which will be based on three points of discussion: the health models themselves, e-health and free circulation of patients and professionals; in all these cases with the aim of improving citizens’ health.  first published: 23/05/2005  last modified: 25/05/2005
