CATALAN AND SPANISH GOVERNMENT WILL PROMOTE MEDITERRANEAN DIET AS WORLD HERITAGE

  • At the closing session of the Forum Euromed Salut 2005, the Catalan Minister of Health, Mrs. Marina Geli, has affirmed that Health does not know about differences and this sector is one of key importance for the cohesion of the society.
  • The President of the Foundation for the Mediterranean Diet has announced an initiative to protect the Mediterranean Diet as a Cultural World Heritage.

At the closing session of the Forum Euromed Salut, Lluís Serra, Professor of Health Prevention and President of the Foundation for the Mediterranean Diet, has announced that the Government of Catalonia together with the Spanish government are going to formally encourage the UNESCO to declare it World Heritage. Professor Serra has urged all the Mediterranean countries to join this initiative, hoping that this declaration can be a reality by the celebration of the First World Congress of Nutrition and Public Health in Barcelona , in September 2006.

Catalan Health Minister, Marina Geli, declared that they were going to hand the conclusions of this Forum to the Meeting of European Heads of State and Government that is going to take place in Barcelona at the end of November. In these final considerations it was said that ‘Health was not only a basic human right, but also one of the greatest sectors of the economy’. Mrs. Geli also brought together the will expressed by all the participants, and insisted on the fact that Health does not know about differences, and remembered that investment in health systems generates wealth and security.

During two days, around 90 participants of 26 European and Mediterranean countries have tried to promote regional policies and progress in health strategies. They have also spoken about application models of the new technologies (e-Health) and free circulation of patients and professionals.

The Forum Euromed objectives are the acquisition of a better knowledge of the reality of the Mediterranean area in terms of health by using the debate and the elaboration of proposals and the promotion of the permeability of health policies among countries, in order to enable international collaboration.

Barcelona, 15th November 2005
